Bird Watching Program at Cameron Highlands

Gaia Discovery brings you a special Bird Watching Program in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

This one-of-a-kind program is designed by bird lovers for bird lovers.

Beginning May 2016, Gaia Discovery invites birders based in Singapore* and elsewhere to bask in Cameronian nature delights in Pahang, West Malaysia. Out of the 662 species of birds that are found in the Checklist of the Birds of Peninsular Malaysia 2012, 177 bird species have been listed in the checklist for Cameron Highlands.

Chestnut-tailed MinlaNow that's a lot of birds! So let's check them out.

An overnight coach takes you directly from Singapore to Cameron Highlands. Sleep on the bus and wake up refreshed, ready to take on the sights and sounds of the feathered kind. Here's what you can look forward to:

  1. Walk through the mystical cloud forest of Gunung Brinchang at 5,800 to 6,400 feet high
  2. Spot songbirds in gardens, treetops and forest trails throughout the stay
  3. Rise before dawn to witness the birth of a new day. Spectacular sunrise (weather permitting) on a mountain peak! With a 4-wheel drive, this is easy. Birds start their day with you at their heels.
  4. Spy on raptors rising with the thermal at the vast tea plantations or "green carpet of Malaysia".
  5. Watch birds along forest trails guided by Cameron Highlands' top bird spotter.
  6. Learn about the bird species, forest eco-system, biodiversity & conservation of forests under threat.

Enjoy this intensive two-day program on nothing but birds, birds and birds.

Birds That Can Be Spotted

A variety of birds decorate the lush landscapes of Cameron Highlands, from songbirds such as the resident Oriental Magpie-robin (Copsychus saularis) and Fire-tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus) and the Blue Whistling-thrush (Myophonus caeruleus) to the playful Silver-eared Mesia (Leiothrix argentauris tahanensis), Streaked Spider-hunter (Arachnothera magna) and the Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush (Garrulax mitratus).

Bird waves are not uncommon on some of the trails. In June 2011, at a back road between Brinchang and Tanah Rata at 1,600 meters high, the following species were sighted: A pair of Golden Babbler (Stachyris chrysaea chrysops), a flock of five Blue-winged Minla (Minla cyanouroptera sordidior), a flock of seven Silver-eared Mesia (Leiothrix argentauris tahanensis), a single Mountain Leaf-warbler (Phylloscopus trivitgatus parvirostris), a pair of Yellow-breasted Warbler (Seicercus montis davisoni), a pair of White-throated Fantail (Rhipidura albicollis atrata) and a White-tailed Robin (Myiomela leucura leucura).

Siberian Thrush"I have come across amazing birdlife like the Red-headed Trogon and Mountain Peacock-pheasant along the trails of Parit Falls at 1,400 metres, as well as the Siberian Thrush and Himalayan Cutia at Gunung Brinchang at 2,000 metres. Without a doubt, the star bird on my checklist would have to be the Rusty Naped Pitta spotted and photographed at Blue Valley," said Satya Murthy of his experiences as a bird and nature guide with Eco Cameron Travel & Tours over the years.

According to Satya, while birds can be spotted throughout the year, with certain months attracting migratory species, May to August are the best months for watching the most biodiverse species of birds in Cameron Highlands.
