LED Lamps
LEDs are the most environmentally-sound and energy-efficient lamps compared to others. LED is short for light-emitting diodes and are made of semi-conductor materials with no mercury or toxic components. This is an ecologically safer choice over compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs that are being marketed as “energy saving” even though they pollute the land and waterways (thus people and wildlife) due to inadequate disposal or recycling means.
New developments have ushered in an exciting range of LED models that can be used in various practical applications for the home and office. LEDs are suitable for small and large building premises with the variety of globe, spotlight and tubing lamps – these can readily available and easily replace existing lamps used.
LED lamps offer long service life and high-energy efficiency - 80% energy savings can be realized immediately.
Wide Range of Applications
LED lamps are used for both general and special-purpose lighting.
Compared to fluorescent bulbs, LED lamps turn on instantly. LED lifetime is unaffected by cycling on and off so that they are well suited for light fixtures where bulbs are often turned on and off. LED light bulbs are also less prone to break.
Diodes use direct current (DC) electrical power, so LED lamps must include internal circuits to operate from standard AC voltage. LEDs are damaged by higher temperatures, hence the need for heat management elements such as heat sinks and cooling fins.
White light LED lamps have the traits of long life expectancy and relatively low energy use. The LED sources are compact, which gives flexibility in designing lighting fixtures and good control over the distribution of light with small reflectors or lenses. Due to the small size of LEDs, control of the distribution of illumination is extremely flexible, and the light output and distribution of a LED array can be controlled with no efficiency loss.
LED lamps have no glass tubes to break, and their internal parts are rigidly supported, making them resistant to vibration and impact. With proper driver electronics design, an LED lamp can be made dimmable over a wide range; there is no minimum current needed to sustain lamp operation.
Comparison With Other Lighting Technologies
Incandescent lamps (light bulbs) form light by running current through a resistive filament, thereby heating the filament to a very high temperature so that it glows and emits visible light. A broad range of visible frequencies are naturally produced, yielding a "warm" yellow or white color quality. However, incandescent light is highly inefficient, as about 98% of the energy input is emitted as heat. The typical lifespan of an AC incandescent lamp is around 1,000 hours.
Fluorescent lamps (light bulbs) or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) work by passing electricity through mercury vapor, which in turn emits ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light is then absorbed by a phosphor coating inside the lamp, causing it to glow, or fluoresce. While the heat generated by a fluorescent lamp is much less than its incandescent counterpart, energy is still lost in generating the ultraviolet light and converting this light into visible light. If the lamp breaks, exposure to mercury will occur. Lifetime varies from 1,200 hours to 20,000 hours for compact fluorescent lamps. Most fluorescent lamps are not compatible with dimmers.
Benefits of LED
The benefits of using LED light sources instead of traditional light sources can be summarised as follows:
- Long life span of up to 50,000 hrs (up to 10 years based on 6 hour use daily)
- Environmentally friendly – no mercury or other hazardous compounds
- Very energy efficient; low voltage operation results in energy and cost savings
- Vivid saturation colours
- High vibration and shock tolerance
- Rapid start-up time
- Up to 80% savings in energy
- Additional 70% savings in energy when using motion sensor
- Reduced maintenance and replacement costs
- Able to apply and trade for carbon credits annually
- IP54 water-and dust-proof rating
- UV-free which reduces insect attraction
- Flicker-free, for comfort to the eyes
